Introduction

One of the most famous ski to the name, Kitzbuhel is a very attractive, traditional resort, it's fitting that each of the idealized image of what a ski area should look like. Famous mountains including the cockscomb, site of the famous annual race, and the Kitzbühel Horn rise around the Tyrolean chalets, from which most of the city.

Though synonymous with skiing, the first Down Hill After arriving in the city in the early 1880s, Kitzbuhel history dates back for millennia before the arrival of the snow sports school. Today, as one of the lowest major ski resorts in the Alps, the resort is often described as one of the first, potentially leading to cope in a time after the winter if global warming continues to hold.

Perhaps with this partly in mind, the place has been spending heavily on some excellent new lifts, giving access to the highest slopes easier than ever before, as well as on snow and non-ski facilities including a wonderful new sports center and a casino.

Where in the World?

Kitzbuehel is located in the northwestern province of Tyrol Austria, in the Kitzbühel Alps.

Hit the slopes

The season runs from mid-December to mid-April.

Ski resort of Kitzbuhel giant can offer much to satisfy all needs, from nursery to gentle slopes guides happy to take on some of the experts most difficult off-piste powder. Most experienced skiers will want to visit the famous Streif on the Hahnemkamm, the famous scene of every race since January, 1930, attracting huge crowds as one of Austria's biggest sporting events.

Kitzbuhel was the first resort, a "ski safari" more than 50 years, with the concept of skiing in a circuit from one mountain to the next, rather than return to the same slopes. Kitzbuhel's own ski safari is still a work in progress that with the installation of a spectacular new gondola, the 3S Bahn, in December 2004 that a final and key link in the fixing of World Records for his highest point above the valley floor (400 m / 1312ft), and the length of the cable between the lift towers. For the 2007 / 8 season the entire ski safari route has snowmaking coverage for the first time.

Kitzbuhel is also part of several larger ski areas "for those who have more than its own large slopes. The Ki-west area of lift-links, more or less (there is a short bus transfer), Kitzbuhel ski area in the neighboring region SkiWelt. This brings a combined area of more than 400 km (250 miles) from the runway, one of the world's largest. Bigger yet is the Kitzbühel Alps ticket (minimum duration of six days), in all this and more at nearby ski resorts offer over 700 km (437 miles) of the plants.

In addition to the slopes

Although a ski center for more than a century, Kitzbuhel offers much, much more.

The new spa and indoor pool (the Aquarena) is a big attraction with waterfall, adventure slides, sauna, hammam, massage, acupuncture, massage, hydrotherapy baths, tanning rooms, nudist deck, heated beds, reflexology, mud wraps, Turkish baths, medical spas, underwater massage, pedicure, lymphatic drainage and many more spa treatments. This is one of several wellness and beauty centers in the city.

The gym Kitzbuhel has an indoor skating rink, climbing wall and curling. There is also a cinema, casino, bowling and three museums in town.

Back outdoors, there is a long list of alternatives to downhill snow sports, including snowshoeing, sledding, Nordic walking, horse-drawn sleigh rides and children's vehicles. Or take to the air with paragliding or ballooning.

Family fun

With its broad areas, easy slopes and the large selection of places to eat and off-piste activities that all ages can enjoy together, Kitzbuhel is a good choice for families.

Surprisingly, there is no organized kindergarten for the youngest children, although a list of babysitting is available from the tourist office. Children aged three and up can join special ski kindergartens, from the ski schools.

Retail Therapy

Kitzbuehel has more than 40 branches, most of them concentrated in the city center, it is a good choice for buyers.

Together with a large selection of sports and fashion boutiques, there are a number of outlets for regional crafts including Rass (Hornweg 18) for the wood carvings.

Apres Ski

With plenty to do off the runway, Kitzbuhel has a far wider range of nightlife options than most ski resorts. For people with the selection includes more than 40 bars, the recently opened casino and four nightclubs. But many of the activities listed in Beyond the slopes (see above) are also in the evening.

Kitzbuhel is not quite a 24-hour average, but it comes close. Under the bar choices are Jimmys (Vorderstadt 31), in the vicinity of mangoes (Vorderstadt 17), which has a slightly surreal tropical theme, and for sports fans Sigi's (Jochbergerstraße 12).

Eat

There are more than 60 places to eat in Kitzbuehel, with many of the restaurants in the pedestrian town center.

There is a far more cosmopolitan mix of dining styles available than in most ski resorts. For example, Ali Baba's snack (Jochbergerstraße 3) serves Turkish cuisine, Bellini (Hornweg 4) makes his own serve antipasti and pasta and pizza and La Fonda (Behind City 13), Mexican food.

There are of course many places to try Tyrolean and other Austrian specialties. Rasmushof (Ried Ecking 15) is an old parlor-style (traditional Tyrolean bar) with fireplace. Hagstein (Hagsteinweg 95) used home-grown ingredients and supplies to order duck.

Getting around

A free ski bus (for holders of ski pass) operates around the resort and the nearby ski resorts including Ashbury, Kirchberg, Aurach, Gillingham, Pass Thurn and Mittersill. The service is less frequent in low season.

Equipped with the latest facilities, the prestigious Kitzbuehel Grander water is used, and you can swim in the soothing waters or wind in the Finnish and bio-sauna or steam room during the search to the imposing summit of the Kitzbühel Horn.
