Mount Kenya National Park

Mount Kenya National Park Information

Mount Kenya, which is an extinct volcano sitting on the Equator, is Africa's second highest peak and stands at an altitude of 5199m (17,058 ft). Opened as the Mount Kenya National Park in 1949, the mountain has been revered by local residents for generations and is the official homepage of "Ngai," the Kikuyu tribe of the Supreme Being. The snow-capped peaks of the volcano was first sighted by an outsider in 1849 - the missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf - although the idea that there is snow on the Equator was not believed, until the British geographer Halford John Mackinder reached the summit in 1899 . The park itself, covering an area of 600 sq km (232 sq miles), offers exotic mountains, starting with highland forest near the bottom and progress in the mountains, forests, bamboo forests and glacier summit. A variety of wild animals inhabited the park, some only for them, including Sykes and Colobus monkeys, buffaloes, elephants, black rhinos, leopards, the elusive bongo antelopes and giant forest pigs. It is also home to many bird species like the giant kingfisher, olive and red-fronted parrots, pigeons.
