Introduction

With a view to a full half-Moon Bay, Plettenberg Bay is a charming and modern resort on South Africa famous Garden Route. Simply known as Plett by the locals, it is high on a rocky peninsula overlooking great beaches, quiet lagoons and indigenous forests. The bay, named Bahia Formosa "(beautiful bay) by early Portuguese explorers, is ideal for water sports such as sailing, deep-sea fishing or diving. You can spot dolphins and seals Dodge surfers in the waves, and during the season (July -December), boat trips are offered to see whales. There are three beaches to choose from, or hiking in the Robberg peninsula nature reserve or around the Keurbooms River Lagoon. polo and golf are also popular leisure activities. Plett is a good starting point for The Garden Route, and some of the most popular attractions such as the Knysna Elephant Park and Monkeyland are within striking distance. For the adrenaline junkie, the highest bungee jump in the world is on the Bloukrans River Bridge.

Who's there?

During the summer December to February, Plettenberg Bay is packed with local visitors during local long school holidays. As a fashionable resort, attracts wealthy people looking for luxury in a beautiful area. The beach is ideal for families, but in winter, it is often disheveled and cool. International tourists visit in general as part of a long journey along the Garden Route.

Where in the World?

Plettenberg Bay is situated on the spectacular Garden Route on South Africa south coast 210km (130 miles) from Port Elizabeth in the east and around 600 km (370 miles) from Cape Town to the west. The nearest airport is in George, 125 km (78 miles) west. The resort overlooking the sea from a prominent hill with a beautiful view. In the north, the Tsitsikamma mountains and Langkloof.

Beach

There are wide beaches fine, all good for swimming in the temperate Indian Ocean. Backed by the vast vegetated dunes, beach is a popular spot for surfing and sunbathing and there is a large restaurant on Lookout Rocks, overlooking the beach. Central Beach is the most and has the lives of guards and is part of the Milkwood trail, nature walk, which winds into the city. The small waves that swim here for peace, it is a good place for families. Robberg beach stretches between the peninsula and Robberg Beacon Iceland and is ideal for long solitary walks.

In addition to the beach

The 5 km (3 miles) Milkwood Trail begins at the parking lot from Marine Drive and meanders in the city and along the beach and is characterized by yellow footprints. There are good hiking trails with mesmerising views of the sea in the Peninsular Robberg nature reserve. Canoeing, bird watching and forest walks are in the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve, 7 km (4 miles) east of Plettenberg Bay, or enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour ride through the beautiful river gorge, which overhung with trees and plants.

Family Fun

Children can have fun building sandcastles on the beach and paddling in the sea, and boat trips to see seals, dolphins and whales will appeal to youngsters. Just off Piesong Valley Road, Wild Waters Adventure Park has a swimming pool with water slide, a playground, mini golf, trampoline and sandpit. Many hotels offer for families and offer extras such as children's swimming pools or gyms jungle.

Retail Therapy

Along the main road are many surf shops that sell swimwear, towels and other beach paraphernalia, gift shops, plus jewelry, sarongs and handicrafts. The old village of Nick (website: www.oldnickvillage.co.za), 3 km (2 miles) to the east of the city, is a group of galleries, studios and shops selling handicrafts, where a small weaving museum and a pleasant Garden restaurant.

A night on the town

There are many cafes and restaurants, most bars, if Plettenberg Bay is not known for its nightlife. It is a popular club in the industrial sector, however, Vegas in Plett (website: www.vegasinplett.co.za), which has an indoor swimming pool, a dance floor and VIP lounge. The best bar in town is the Lookout Deck, with a view to the waves crash on Lookout Beach and has plenty of cold beer, delicious strawberry daiquiris on the long cocktail menu and it serves pub grub.

Eat

You can be sure of gourmet food, fine wines and first class service in Plettenberg Bay, and most restaurants have a magnificent view of the ocean or the Keurbooms River. Both centrally located on the main street, 57 Kloof (Tel: (044) 533 1379) has room-high windows and a good selection of steak, pasta and seafood, and the Blue Bay Cafe (Tel: (044) 533 1390) is good for light Deli-style lunch.

Getting around

Plettenberg Bay is fairly small and easily negotiable on foot, although there are some steep hills between the city center and the beaches. Metered taxis are recommended after dark. Renting a car offers the greatest flexibility for the rest of the Garden Route.

Exploring beyond

There are some places just a short drive along the N2 highway. The Knysna Elephant Sanctuary (website: www.knysnaelephantpark.co.za) is 10 km (6 miles) east of the city, where visitors can walk and touch elephants, while 16 km (10 miles) to the west is Monkeyland ( Internet: www. monkeyland.co.za), netted a large tract of forest, the home of lemurs, monkeys and apes. Next door is a similar concept for birds at Birds of Eden (website: www.birdsofeden.co.za). Shortly after that Bloukrans Bridge, where adrenaline junkies can try to get the hair-raising 216M (708ft) bungee jump from the bridge or the 200 m (658ft) on the Flying Fox Bloukrans Gorge (website: www.faceadrenalin.com ).

Splashing

Five-star food and beverage can be seen on the sand in Plettenberg Hotel (website: www.plettenberg.com) on Lookout Rocks, where food is to fine wines. Dishes are superbly presented and drizzled in delicate oils, sauces and foams, and the chocolate and meringue desserts are to die for. Do not miss the hotel stylish cocktail bar with a modern white marble and leather interior.
