It's hard to believe, but the land on which Washington, DC's elegant National Mall and its stately building was once a marshy swamp. George Washington, which this particular district as a federal power hub, the problem of establishing the capital in a state.

The tragic events in the capital on 11 September 2001, when a hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon. Since that time, barricades, blocked-off streets, police and security checks are part of the city, a different facade.

Washington, DC (Washington DC and for the visitors or the District Court for the locals) is divided into four quadrants - Northwest (NW), Northeast (NE), South (SO) and Southwest (SW). It is a city of neighborhoods, each with its own diverse culture.

Capitol Hill, the Capitol, is a blend of government buildings, row houses and specialty shops and restaurants. Foggy Bottom, including several public buildings, is now a charming, peaceful surroundings. Perhaps the most famous is Georgetown, a historic district with elegant building from the 18th and 19 Century town houses, home to many influential residents, as well as trendy restaurants and shops. One of the most colorful neighborhood is Adams Morgan, with an eclectic mix of international restaurants, sidewalk cafes, ethnic shops and late-night entertainment.

After the federal government, tourism is the capital especially the industry. Over 15 million tourists each year, the city, but to see who in the autumn, spring and summer than in winter, when it can be bitterly cold and wet.

They are the wealth of impressive monuments and museums, many of which have free admission. Other important industries are also professional organizations, legal, academic and publishing. The city is also the headquarters of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

Although the rich on the surface, the city has problems with a high crime rate, and high unemployment, illiteracy and drug abuse. In recent years she has cleaned its act. The crime rate has declined and the city has been revitalized.

It is now chic to live DC, where power and politics are a heady mix. So much American history is full of it. Moreover, its abundance of monuments, public buildings, museums and memorials in the past heroes and the visitor can not fail to be impressed.
