Introduction
Beautifully situated, Zell am See lounges in addition to its namesake lake, surrounded by jagged peaks. It is a year-round attraction for tourists. Easily accessible by road and rail, but also the bodies of the city and the intimacy of a village.
Zell am See has partnered with the nearby smaller and Kaprun to the big Zell am See-Kaprun ski area. Skiing gathered pace early here. Departures were as far back as 1893, and the Kitzsteinhorn was the first Austrian glacier ski them. Unfortunately, unwanted advertising came in November 2000 from a devastating fire in Kaprun Glescherbahn the Mountain, in which 155 died.

Where in the World?
Zell am See is situated in the central Alps, south of Salzburg and east of Kitzbuhel. The Dienten AlpsAlps rise from the sky over the lake, but the really great things is in the south and east, in the Hohe Tauern. A part of this series is Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, at 3797m (12457ft).
Hit the slopes
The season runs from late November until mid-April. In addition, the 3203m (10509ft) Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski resort is open all year, except in midsummer.
Skiing is best for intermediate products. Despite the height, the glacier runs are usually mild or moderate in a relatively smooth arena surrounded by peaks.
The best twisting, running experts are Schmittenhöhe, where the cable car rises to 1965m (6647ft). After the fire, the Glescherbahn remained closed and was replaced by a new cable car.
Off-piste skiing is discouraged in most places in the interest of environmental protection. There is a snowboard park at the summit train, and halfpipe on the glacier.
In addition to the slopes
Other options on the mountains and luge (on Kitzsteinhorn and Schmitt height) and hiking or Nordic walking. It is often possible to skate on the lake to Thumersbach.
The parish has an elegant interior, despite its robust housing. Nearby, the medieval tower Vogt (town square) houses local crafts, including examples of the fear, horned masks, the Krampus in the annual festival on 5 December. The world-class attractions of Salzburg are within reach of a day.
Family fun
Several ski schools vie for your visit. Alpine sports in the Mountain Zeller base gets good reports. You have a kindergarten mini-club for two years and up to the fun park by the Schmittenhöhe base, and a kids club for the aged three to four years. Joys (Anton Wallnerstrasse 9) is a nursery, toddlers over 12 months.
The family-friendly recreation center, recreation center (Steiner lane 3-5), has a swimming pool with water slides, saunas, bowling alley and an ice rink. It is an Alpine center of the old Glescherbahn.
Retail Therapy
With a population of 10000 to the city has no shortage of shops in the center. There are many opportunities for sports and crafts, as well as striking boutiques, shops and sell more pragmatic positions. Hierner (Town Square 6) is good for crafts and decorative glass.
Apres Ski
Crazy Daisy (Brucker Federal Road 10-12) is one of the core areas of the energetic après-ski scene. A more mature clientele frequent Refreshments (Schmitt 12) and Greens XL (Seegasse 1). The Rock Bar (Bahnhofplatz 2a) is open from 1800 and has occasional theme nights. Late at night, try Viva Nightclub (Kirchengasse 1).
Eat
Copper boiler (Brucker Federal Road 18) is good for pizza and much more, everything is located in a former gas station. Even inexpensive, but specializes in Austrian food, is host Steiner (Schlossplatz 1).
The restaurant at the Hotel Zum Hirschen
(Trinity Road 1) is a good mid-price choice, served fish from the lake in a wood-paneled room. For top-quality dining in elegant surroundings, there are bars Salzburg (Salzburgerhof hotel, Auerspergstrasse 11).
Getting around
A free ski bus links Zell am See and Kaprun and lift all the major hubs. There is a small pedestrian-only area in the center of Zell am See.
Splash out
For the ultimate off-piste skiing, the environmental restrictions, you can hire a guide and ski off the back end of the glacier to the Niedersill valley. It is an exciting journey.
